From 2027 onward, BMW M will redefine high-performance driving with a bold step into fully electric propulsion. Staying true to its mantra — “Born on the racetrack. Made for the streets. Core of a passionate community.” — BMW M is bringing its legendary motorsport DNA into a new generation of electrified vehicles designed to set fresh benchmarks in the high-performance segment.
According to Franciscus van Meel, Managing Director of BMW M GmbH, the next wave of models will leverage cutting-edge Neue Klasse technology to elevate the brand’s unmistakable driving experience. The goal: deliver racetrack-ready dynamics for everyday use — without compromise.
A New Benchmark in Driving Dynamics
At the heart of this transformation is the fully electric drivetrain, engineered to combine exhilarating performance with real-world usability. Built on the forward-looking Neue Klasse architecture, the next-generation BMW M models feature a centrally controlled, individual wheel drive system that unlocks entirely new levels of precision, traction, and safety.
Four advanced high-performance computers — referred to as “Superbrains” — manage key vehicle functions, including driving dynamics (“Heart of Joy”), automated driving, infotainment, and comfort systems. This integrated electronics architecture enables lightning-fast data processing, improved system responsiveness, and seamless over-the-air updates, ensuring the vehicles continue to evolve long after they leave the factory.

BMW M eDrive: Precision at Every Wheel
Central to the electric revolution is the newly developed BMW M eDrive system, based on BMW’s sixth-generation (Gen6) technology platform. In a groundbreaking configuration, each of the four wheels is powered by its own electric motor — two at the front axle and two at the rear.
This setup merges the benefits of rear-wheel and all-wheel drive while delivering unprecedented control. The M-specific “Heart of Joy” software and BMW M Dynamic Performance Control system precisely distribute torque to each individual wheel. The result is maximum traction, optimized energy recuperation, sharper throttle response, and enhanced safety — even at the performance limit.
Drivers can also decouple the front axle entirely, enabling a pure rear-wheel-drive experience for those seeking classic BMW M dynamics. Combined with simulated gear shifts, selectable driving modes, and a newly developed soundscape, the electric BMW M models promise to deliver the emotional engagement enthusiasts expect from the brand.
Notably, these electric drive units boast the highest power density ever used in a BMW M vehicle. Each motor is paired with its own gearbox, inverter, and integrated oil supply system, allowing for extremely precise torque management and seamless blending between regenerative braking and traditional braking systems.
High-Voltage Performance Meets Everyday Practicality
Powering the BMW M eDrive system is a specially adapted high-voltage battery with more than 100 kWh of usable energy. Developed with a “Design to Power” philosophy, this Gen6 cylindrical cell battery is engineered for both racetrack endurance and everyday usability.
Thanks to 800-volt architecture, the new models will deliver high charging performance alongside extended driving range. Enhanced cooling systems and the Energy Master — an intelligent battery control center located outside the battery pack — ensure consistent high peak outputs even under demanding conditions.
The battery housing itself contributes structurally to the vehicle, increasing overall rigidity. This added stiffness directly enhances handling precision and overall driving dynamics, reinforcing BMW M’s performance-first philosophy.

Sustainable Innovation Through Lightweight Engineering
Lightweight construction has long been a cornerstone of BMW M performance, and that legacy continues in the electric era. For the first time, BMW M will introduce natural fibre elements into its high-performance production models.
Having refined this material in motorsport applications since 2019, BMW M has demonstrated its durability and integration potential. Natural fibre components offer performance characteristics comparable to carbon fiber, while reducing CO₂ emissions during production by approximately 40 percent — a meaningful step toward greater sustainability without sacrificing performance.
